We are fortunate in Georgia to have such pleasant seasons and moderate weather.

Some people prefer the colder winter months, and like to participate in winter-related activities (sledding, ice skating, skiing, and playing in the snow).

Other people prefer the warmer summer months, and would rather spend time outside in the sun (playing sports, going to the beach, swimming, and going on picnics).

For this post, I wou ld like you to write a persuasive paragraph telling me about your favorite season (choose Winter, Spring, Summer, or Fall) and giving reasons why that season is your favorite. Try to be convincing in your post by using specific details to support your reasons.

Fall Picture

As I was hiking through the woods, I was kept company by the sounds of the leaves crunching under my boots. The cool mountain air wrapped around me, making me glad I'd remembered to wear a sweater. Brightly colored leaves danced in the sunlight as the breeze moved through the branches of the trees. My mind was filled with the sounds, smells, and textures of nature. It was a beautiful fall day, and I was glad to be outside where I could enjoy it.

What is a hero? Our next SEM unit will celebrate heroes and the contributions these individuals made to our country and the world.

One of the bravest people I've heard about is Captain Sully. You may have heard or read about him, or even seen him on television. He is a pilot who safely landed his plane on the Hudson River in New York when his plane unexpectedly had engine problems. He was able to land his plane and evacuate all of the passengers and crew. He had to stay calm during the crisis. Even though he had been trained on emergency landings, it was still difficult and terrifying. He may not have woken up that morning thinking he would be a hero later that day, but I think everyone on the plane thinks of him as a hero.

My Favorite Thing About Fall

While raking leaves this weekend, I began to wonder what your favorite thing was about fall.

Fall has always been an enjoyable time of year to me. I remember when I was your age how much fun my brother and I had raking the leaves in the backyard, and then taking turns running and jumping into the pile. I also remember the smell of the leaves, and all of the beautiful and dazzling colors as the sunlight came through the branches. Every fall, our mother made us put away our summer clothes, and get out our fall sweaters and jackets, checking to make sure we could still wear them. We would drive up to North Georgia to the Apple Barn to pick out our favorite apples to bring back home, stopping to take pictures of the trees on the way home. While we were in the mountains, we would take a hike on a trail. I remember the sound of the leaves crunching under my shoes as we looked for the prettiest leaves to bring home and press in a book. I have many memories of spending time with my family during fall, which may be why it is one of my favorite times of the year.

Once upon a time, I was sitting on a cloud. Then I was bored so I jumped down and landed in the Atlantic Ocean. Then I evaporated up to the big clouds, and I saw a lot of people. Then I landed in the Atlantic Ocean again for two years and saw a tuna, a shark, a tiger shark, a jellyfish, and like 500 sea turtles.

Then I evaporated up to the clouds for a year and saw a big building then swoosh I fell out of the sky like a hawk and landed on a big turtle and saw a bunch of spotted raccoons. Then I landed in the big blue Atlantic Ocean. I saw like 100,000 jellyfish. Then I saw a shark hit me and I flew like a eagle and landed on soil. After I went up to the clouds and never came back down!!!

First I was in a camel, then I immediately evaporated.The cloud moved all the way to Antartica which was a long far away drive, I met another droplet (droppy) but he got dropped off at a garden. I was so sad, soon I dropped in glacier but just then I got evaporated, before I knew where I was, I was in groundwater coming up to soil then another cloud! About 3 minutes later I was in an ocean, the Atlantic Ocean. Ahhhhhh! Oops back in a cloud again.

One day there was a bear named Bob.He shook his fur as fast as a car spinning. I was sitting on him with my droplet friends and I fell in the soil. I evaporated and I came up to the clouds as water vapor. After I got evaporated it started raining and then I flew faster than Batman to the ground. Then after I landed, I became groundwater.

After I rested with the other groundwater, I traveled to the Atlantic Ocean, then again I got evaporated. I know I was getting evaporated because I was flying... Again it started raining and I fell in the groundwater.

I fell into the Chattahoochee River. I finally flew up again and got evaporated. It rained and I fell down into groundwater. Finally, I evaporated then I rained on a glacier.

Worm Recipes

After reading "How to Eat Fried Worms" you've learned a lot about delicious ways to prepare worms.

For this blog post, I'd like you to create your own worm recipe and share your recipe with the class.

Your recipe needs to include the following information:

1. Ingredients
Including how much of each, use standard or metric measurements, but be sure to include the measurement with the amount. (For example, 1/2 cup, 1/4 teaspoon, a pinch, 1 1/2 quarts, 3 liters, etc...)

2. Steps
Be specific and use cooking terms. You need to include numbers to order the steps. Make sure you include each thing you need to do, do not assume people will know to put something in a pot, or press start.

3. Other information
Include any other information you think someone needs to know (how many servings, breakfast, lunch, dinner, nutritional value, allergy alerts, etc...)

You also need to give your recipe a creative name and include your initials.

Earth Day Word Problems

In 1970, Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin proclaimed April 22 to be "Earth Day." We are going to celebrate this important day by working in groups to solve some real-world problems. Hopefully, what we learn will help us discover more ways to help our planet.

Use your math skills to solve these problems. Be earth-friendly creative in responding. Can you do it without using any paper? You may copy and paste into the wiki or you may reply to the blog post. Be sure to include your initials in your post.

Problem 1

Rainforests cover only a small part of the Earth but they are home to more than half the world's plants and animals. It is estimated that rainforests are being cut down at the rate of 100 trees per minute. At this rate, how many are cut down every a day (24 hours)? Every week (7 days)? Hint: You need to determine the number of minutes in one day. Use the calculator on your computer.

Problem 2
The average American uses 7 trees a year in paper, wood, and other products. If there are about 275 million Americans, how many trees are used in a year? Use the calculator on your computer.

Problem 3
Each American throws away about 60 pounds of plastic packaging each year. At this rate, about how many years would it take one person to have thrown away a ton of plastic? Hint: You need to find out how many pounds are in a ton.

Problem 4
When you shower, you use 5 gallons of water every minute. Most people take 5 minute showers. How many gallons of water does a family of 4 use in a week (assuming they each take a daily shower)? How much do they use in a month? Hint: You may want to create a table (you can create one on a word document) to help you organize your algebraic reasoning (think about number patterns and functions).

Problem 5
A bath uses 50 gallons of water. How much water could a person save in a week taking a shower instead of a bath (assume you take 1 shower each day).

Problem 6
If each person took a 4 minute shower instead of a 5 minute shower, how much water could a single person save in a year?

Problem 7
A gallon of thrown away paint can seep into the Earth and pollute 250,000 gallons of drinking water. A spilled gallon of gasoline can pollute 750,000 gallons of water. What kind of damage would be done by just 3 gallons of paint and 2 gallons of gasoline?

Problem 8
It has been estimated that, on the average, each person in the United States discards about 32 pounds of solid waste each week. Some of the things that we dispose of can be broken down into: 5.1 pounds of ashes and dirt; 3.5 pounds of metal; 2.6 pounds of glass; 2.6 pounds of garbage; 2.2 pounds of wood, rags, and plastic. Make a bar graph to display this information.

Last week we started to study different habitats in Georgia. We studied the mountains and the Piedmont (which is where you live). As I look out the window on my back porch, I can hear a cardinal singing in the wisteria that is growing wildly on the arbor. The fish in the pond are swimming slowly under the current of the waterfall. The gray squirrels and chipmunks are scurrying under the lower branches of the azaleas trying to find small seeds dropped from the bird feeders. A ruby-throated hummingbird catches my eye as it flies quickly from the deep-red flowers on the trumpet vine to the lilac petals of the water hyacinth on the pond. The dogwood and cherry trees provide shade to the thrashers and wrens searching for more seeds.

After reading "The Banza", think about the events, characters, and issues in the story. Also, go back through the story and look for vocabulary words that were used to make the story more meaningful or that gave more detail.

Adapt to your habitat

We've been talking about how plants and animals have adapted to survive in their habitats. For this blog reply, I'd like you to use your imagination to write a short descriptive paragraph (5-8 sentences) from the point of view of an animal or plant.

Eleanor Roosevelt

This week we read about some important historical figures. I'd like you to think about what we've talked about and learned from our discussions. You may use the resources on PortaPortal and from your notes to help you.

Cesar Chavez is remembered for his efforts to help migrant workers. As a farm worker, Chavez had a difficult life, traveling from farm to farm, trying to make ends meet. He saw how unfairly workers were treated and he spent many years fighting for fair treatment of workers. Chavez used boycotts to influence the owners of the farms. Because of his hard work, farm workers began to be treated more fairly.

Lyndon B. Johnson was President during a difficult time in our country's history. During his presidency, many people were unhappy about the treatment of minorities. The Civil Rights movement was becoming an important issue for all Americans. President Johnson had to lead the country through this challenging time and help people understand that all citizens should be treated equally.

Franklin D. Roosevelt was another man who faced challenges. As a person, he was afflicted with polio, which made it difficult for him to move around. As a president, he had to help the country get through the Great Depression - a period in our history when millions of people lost their homes and their jobs. During his 4 terms as president, our country faced economic struggles, war abroad, and huge industrial growth.

Auburn Raptor Center

Last week, we had a wonderful presentation by the researchers from the Auburn University Raptor Center. Students had an opportunity to see and learn about different raptors found in and around Georgia.

Our next SEM unit is "Birds of Prey", and during this unit, students will learn about the habitats and charateristics of many kinds of raptors.

Service Animals

In our story this week, "Rosie, the Visiting Dog", we learn about how one dog helps people. Think about what Rosie does in the story and why she does it.

My summer was extremely busy and not at all relaxing. I worked on math activities for school, finished another semester of graduate school, and created some new technology projects for our class. Meg and I did go to the beach for a day - she loves splashing in the waves and digging in the sand. My friend from Texas came to visit, and we played golf for a week in Auburn, Alabama.
