This week we read about some important historical figures. I'd like you to think about what we've talked about and learned from our discussions. You may use the resources on PortaPortal and from your notes to help you.
Cesar Chavez is remembered for his efforts to help migrant workers. As a farm worker, Chavez had a difficult life, traveling from farm to farm, trying to make ends meet. He saw how unfairly workers were treated and he spent many years fighting for fair treatment of workers. Chavez used boycotts to influence the owners of the farms. Because of his hard work, farm workers began to be treated more fairly.
Lyndon B. Johnson was President during a difficult time in our country's history. During his presidency, many people were unhappy about the treatment of minorities. The Civil Rights movement was becoming an important issue for all Americans. President Johnson had to lead the country through this challenging time and help people understand that all citizens should be treated equally.
Franklin D. Roosevelt was another man who faced challenges. As a person, he was afflicted with polio, which made it difficult for him to move around. As a president, he had to help the country get through the Great Depression - a period in our history when millions of people lost their homes and their jobs. During his 4 terms as president, our country faced economic struggles, war abroad, and huge industrial growth.
I would like you to respond to this post sharing your thoughts about Eleanor Roosevelt. What was her legacy? What did she contribute to our nation's history - as a person and as a First Lady.

As a person, Eleanor Roosevelt was a survivor. She lost her parents when she was young but continued her life with much success. In the White House, she was a leader. She took care of her husband, Franklin Roosevelt, who had polio. She worked with him to help get the nation through the Depression. For the people, she was an advocate for the poor. She taught reading to poor children and ran factories for people without jobs. **MLG**
Eleanor was the First Lady of the United States from 1933 to 1945. After her husband's death in 1945, Roosevelt continued to be an internationally prominent author, speaker, politician, and activist for the New Deal coalition. She worked to enhance the status of working women, although she opposed the Equal Rights Amendment because she believed it would adversely affect women.

Eleanor Roosevelt was first lady and wife of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. She took care of him and helped him in his work as president of the United States. Eleanor Roosevelt also supported workers' rights. She wanted workers to join labor unions. She wanted better working conditions and fairness for laborers. Eleanor Roosevelt was a United States delegate to the United Nations after World War II. She worked hard to promote peace, equality and human rights. She was brave, caring and did her best to help people.

Eleanor Roosavelt was a very important person because she filled in for the president. The reason she did that is because once Franklin went on avaction and while he was there he caught a horrible disease. The disease made President Franklin lose his ability to walk. So she filled in for him. We remember her for this and that is her legacy.

Eleanor Roosevelt helped give people jobs, taught the blind to read, and was the supporter of the civil rights. Also, she gave the speeches her husband was supposed to give because her husband was sick.
